Motion Straight Images

I really like this image because I find capturing falling water extremely intriguing. This is an example of a freeze frame image and I feel as if I have achieved the action and freeze frame of falling water very well. It is hard to take a picture of falling water due to the short amount of time you have to take the photo. I adjusted the shutter speed setting on the camera to 1/2000th of a second so that I was able to catch the water falling at the right moment. Adjusting the shutter speed when aiming to capture a photograph such as this one is very important.I like how the bird bath is unfocused and the water is in clear focus because it means that the water is the thing we purely focus on and is eye catching.

I chose this image as one of my favourites because I like how the roundabout is spinning so fast that we cannot clearly work out where the dividing poles are actually positioned. This is because again, by adjusting the shutter speed I was able to catch the roundabout spinning at a fast pace. It looks blurry due to the speed that it is going which creates an illusion. This is an example of a motion blur picture which I think I have managed to capture pretty well. I like the idea of photographing things which you can move yourself in order to create motion blur because you can move (spin in this case) the objects at whatever speed you desire. I think that this picture would look better in black and white because I do not like the colours.

I like this image because it shows motion blur again as movement of a human body. The hand looks blurry because of the waving movement that the person is presenting. Even though we know the form of a hand, it is hard to work out the distinct shape from this picture due to the blurriness, I could look further into photographing people performing different actions such as fast walking, running, riding a bike, hair flicking or playing sports to represent motion blur. I like the background in this picture because it is neutral and does not contain any distractions. It is also a good background to present motion blur because the pale skin contrasts with the dark tones of the trees/bushes which makes it stand out more.

I chose this picture as one of my favourites because I like how I have captured the wind chime swaying back and forth. This is another example of freeze frame because I have taken a still image of an object that is moving. The wind chime is moving naturally with the wind and I did not have to move it myself. I really like the lighting and how focused it is because the wind chime is contrasted against the neutral background.

Movement Work Diary

Planning

Evaluation and Progression

I chose this picture as one which I wanted to explore and adjust because it has potential to show motion really effectively. In my opinion, catching falling water is fairly hard due to the limited amount of time you have to catch it at a precise moment. I adjusted the shutter speed setting to 1/2000th of a second because this would catch the photo extremely fast. adjusting the shutter speed helps towards capturing a effective picture an extraordinary amount. When looking at photographing motion, I have enjoyed working with objects that you can move yourself. For example, in this case, I was able to tip the bird bath as much as I want, enabling as much water to flow out as I required. Furthermore, this meant that I could take several pictures, pouring out different amounts of water each time. I like the colours here such as the deep red pigment within the bird bath and the dark green grass. These contrast because they are complimentary colours meaning they work well together. These colours again contrast with the clear water which is really focused and outlined. The bird bath is slightly unfocused which I think is good because we focus more on the falling water rather than anything else.

Progression

To progress this picture, I only made some subtle adjustments using Photoshop. I think that the picture already worked really well with motion. It shows use of freeze frame as an effective technique to present motion photography. In my opinion, the original picture was effective, but dull and therefore, I used Photoshop to adjust the exposure, brightness, vibrance and contrast. This made the picture brighter as a whole and which made the water stand out better. By adjusting the vibrance and contrast, the water droplets were more defined. I cropped out some the bird bath from the picture because this is not what I want people to focus on. Also, the adjustments I made on Photoshop, made the colours more saturated. this meant that the deep red colour turned more to a purple colour which i don't think worked well. If I were to take this picture again, I could try to cut out some of the bird bath, focusing purely on the falling water.

Evaluation

Here is an image of pampas grass which I have taken to represent motion photography. There is little motion but I like how the plant is gently swaying in the wind. I managed to capture it by using the camera settings: shutter speed 1/225th of a second and an f stop of 2.8. With these settings, I was able to produce an image which capture a small amount of movement and wasn't too dark in colour. The movement shown looks soft and gentle. The dull dominant colours work well with the slow movement, creating calm and sensual feelings. The overcast and cloudy sky creates a particular coldness when looking at this image, making it look crisp.

Progression

To progress this image, I used Photoshop to change it into black and white and adjust the curves, making the dark tones darker. I think that this image looks better in black and white because it creates a sense of blandness and adds further calm feelings. I then adjusted the vibrancy, expose and gamma correction to ensure I had manipulated it to create an image which presented a effective outline of motion and also was intriguing.

Evaluation

I chose this image as one which I wanted to focus on and progress because I like the fast spinning motion that I have been able to capture of the roundabout. My camera settings were f stop 2.8 and a shutter speed of 1/1000th of second. This meant that I was able to capture an image containing a perfect amount of light and the object spinning particularly fast. I like this image because it is hard to work out were the poles of the roundabout would be placed because they are blurred and repeated in the picture.

Progression

To progress this image I used Photoshop to change it in black and white and adjust the colour levels in the picture. I wanted to turn it into black and white because I did not like the contrast of the purple, orange and green because I do not think that they work well together. I wanted to make the lighter colour of the poles stand out massively because there were a lot of dark tones in the mage that could have drawn the attention away from the blurred motion of the poles. I then adjusted the contrast and vibrancy of the image to ensure the poles really stood out against the roundabout.

Progression

I chose this image as one which I needed to improve and/or retake because firstly, I have taken it at a completely wrong angle (its's on it's side). I should have used a tripod to ensure that the image was not blurry and that I captured the falling water accurately without my hand shaking. I also don't like the clouds very much because it looks dull and the water does not contrast well against them. Therefore, I could retake this image using  tripod and at a better angle and use Photoshop to change it into black and white.

Progression

Due to the fact that this specific topic was quite unsuccessful, I wanted to show some further progression by returning and taking some more images for this project. Here I took a image which shows only slight movement. However, it is a freeze frame of people on an old fashioned merry go round. I like this image because it is more picturesque than other images within this focus. It is mpre intriguing than the images presented above. To progress this project further, I should possibly take more image similar to this one, to show that I returned back to the project with willingness to improve and gain greater knowledge about the camera settings used within motion photography.

Recording Aperture Blur

Recording Motion Definiton

Freeze framefreeze frame shot is used when one shot is printed in a single frame several times, in order to make an interesting illusion of a still photograph.

Motion blur - is the apparent streaking of rapidly moving objects in a still image or a sequence of images such as a movie or animation. It results when the image being recorded changes during the recording of a single exposure, either due to rapid movement or long exposure.

\

ISO - in Digital Photography ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. The same principles apply as in film photography – the lower the number the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain. Higher ISO settings are generally used in darker situations to get faster shutter speeds.

Aperture - A device that controls the amount of light admitted through an opening.

Shutter speed - the nominal time for which a shutter is open at a given setting.

Note: The main f stops in your camera are 2.8,4.0, 5.6, 8,11,16,22, 32.  for each increase in f stop value the amount of light entering the camera is reduced by a half.

Framing Straight Images

I chose image as one which was one of my favourites because I like the harsh effect of the barbed wire. This picture consists of a rough wooden frame which creates an outline for the forest in the background. I like it because the barbed wire is in focus and the background inside the frame is out of focus. Therefore, it not only present framing, but a vicious texture. I enjoy taking pictures which are unusual takes on a subject topic and also that incorporate other focuses within them (in this case, texture and framing). The harsh effect of the rough wood as a frame and the sharp barbed wire contrasts with the soft, unfocused background.

I really like this image because each section of the 'whole frame' acts as a frame itself. This also acts as representation of framing within framing - there are also frames inside the original frame. I like the metal fragile look of the structure because it creates a interesting frame. The structure is unique and abstract which is why I find it intriguing.

I like this take on framing photograph because the diamond shape creates a sharpe outlined frame for the background behind. Once again, I really like the wooden frame similar to the one shown previously. The abstract structure creates a more interesting frame for the background and similarly to the picture shown above, the 'whole frame' holds individual frames.

I like this image because I have taken a literal frame and placed it against a background. This idea was taken from an image that I had gathered from the internet (recorded in my image bank). I really like this because thee 'picture' which can be seen through the frame is very distinct and clear, while objects outside of the frame are blurry for example my hand is blurry. I will not crop out the hand from the picture because I think it again outlines the fact that I have used a literal frame ad an object to represent framing photography.
